Peter is a Distinguished Fellow of the Royal United Services Institute, the UK’s leading defence and security think-tank, and a Trustee of MAG International, the conflict prevention and landmines charity. He is a member of the Board of Advisors of CPDS UK.

Peter retired from the British Diplomatic Service in 2021 after over 30 years’ service, including serving overseas in Vienna, Bonn, Rome and Accra, where he was British High Commissioner to Ghana and non-resident British Ambassador to Burkina Faso and Togo. Peter served in a range of policy and corporate roles in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London, including as Director for Defence and International Security from 2014 to 2017 and Director-General and Chief Operating Officer (COO) from 2017 to 2020. As Director, Peter was responsible for NATO, the UK’s European and international security policy relationships, counter-proliferation, arms control and arms exports policy. As COO, he was a member of the Foreign Office’s Management Board and Executive Committee, and responsible for the Department’s corporate and operational functions as well as the UK’s global diplomatic network of 280 Embassies and other Posts in 170 countries.
